It is time to prepare for Small Business Saturday! This special shopping day dedicated to supporting local small businesses takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 26.
Since American Express launched Small Business Saturday in 2010 as part of their Shop Small movement, the event has grown into a nationwide celebration of our independently-owned local merchants. In 2015, a record number of merchants participated in the program designed to attract holiday shoppers. American Express hopes to keep growing with even more businesses and shoppers participating this year.
Over 95 million shoppers participated in Small Business Saturday last year. This has become a shopping highlight of the holiday season and a great way for small businesses to connect with holiday shoppers.
American Express is still accepting applications for their Neighborhood Champions through mid-October. These Neighborhood Champions can be business associations, local or state chambers of commerce, or other community organizers who are willing to help organize businesses and drive participation in Small Business Saturday. Be sure to check the Terms of Participation if you are interested in becoming a Neighborhood Champion.
Businesses participating in Small Business Saturday reap many benefits from the program, including participation in local events, marketing materials provided by American Express, and the enthusiasm of local customers eager to support local businesses. Check with your local chamber of commerce to see who your Neighborhood Champion is and how you can connect with events in your area.
Successful Small Business Saturday events around the country are getting shoppers into brick-and-mortar stores during the busiest shopping time of the year. Many neighborhoods add additional fun to the day by organizing music, scavenger hunts, and sidewalk shopping. Holiday lights, hot cocoa and treats, and music can make the festive event last long into the evening hours, too.
Participating merchants are also listed on the American Express Shop Small map. This directory gives American Express cardholders access to business listings near them.
