Small Business Saturday 2016 is almost here! Merchants and customers will celebrate local, independently owned business on Saturday, November 26th. This is the seventh annual Small Business Saturday sponsored by American Express as part of their Shop Small movement.
This special shopping event has grown to enormous popularity and huge participation. 95 million shoppers enjoyed Small Business Saturday last year, and that number is expected to grow in 2016.1 The momentum of holiday shoppers to support their community businesses is a wonderful opportunity for independent business owners.
Small Business Saturday is also showing a year-long benefit for merchants. According to a study released last week by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), 89% of consumers aware of Small Business Saturday say that it encourages them to shop at independently-owned businesses through the rest of the year.2
Participating in Small Business Saturday has become a powerful way for merchants to draw customers into their brick and mortar stores or restaurants while building customer loyalty for their businesses. Customers are even willing to spend a little more to support their community businesses.
65% of customers reported they would spend a little more for an item at a local business with the expectation of great customer service.3
American Express is also promoting small businesses by allowing card members to enroll for double reward points when they use their cards at participating small businesses through the end of the year. This allows small businesses to point to the program throughout the holidays and gives customers another reason to shop small beyond the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The message is clear: Small Business Saturday is a way to win fans that will stay with you all year long. Just remember to reward them with the best customer experience possible!
American Express is encouraging participating businesses and customers to use social media to promote their local shops and restaurants with the hashtags #ShopSmall, #SmallBizSat, and #DineSmall.
Integrity offers our merchants access to Shop Small and Small Business Saturday through the American Express OptBlue program, a program for merchants who process less than $1,000,000 in annual American Express volume. American Express OptBlue through Integrity also allows merchants to receive funds faster since we can settle these transactions with all other card brands, and OptBlue also allows merchants the convenience of a single processing statement and a single point of contact for customer service.
