The payment security landscape is always changing, so we are proud to share our partner, Trustwave’s 2017 Global Security Report. Integrity is dedicated to protecting our merchants and their customer data. Education is an important first step in cutting off cybercrime at the pass.
One of Trustwave’s most important goals is to “stay ahead of the game.” Their detailed Global Security Report demonstrates how knowledge, expertise, and investigation help prepare for new and evolving security challenges. Since 63% of cyberattacks targeted payment card data, this information is important for everyone in the payment processing industry, merchants, and consumers.
This report is an extremely persuasive argument for adopting EMV-chip card technology. Trustwave found that POS attacks increased to 31% of all attacks in 2016 from 22% in 2015. The slower North American adoption of more secure chip-and-PIN transactions leaves this section of the payment landscape more open to attack.
With increased diligence in eCommerce environments, attacks decreased from 38% in 2015 to 26% in 2016. Increased use of applications reveals room for further improvement as almost all of the applications Trustwave tested included at least one vulnerability.
Trustwave includes valuable advice in this report for firewall usage, email protection, and best practices based upon PCI standards. The best defense is staying up-to-date and following common sense practices like using strong passwords, changing passwords frequently, and strictly controlling remote access.
The report also examines the duration of data compromises, including the time between intrusion to detection, detection to containment, and intrusion to containment. When a breach is self-detected, containment was found to be 60% faster. Vigilance is key. Keeping software updated and running the latest version of firewalls and antivirus protection should be a priority. Securing and monitoring your POS system, eCommerce environment, and computer network will always be less costly than fixing a security breach, but in the case of detecting a threat a swift response is worth a lot, too.
We encourage you to read through this fascinating report. Trustwave outlines a number of upheavals in the cybercrime environment that will shape the future of payment processing security and fraud detection. Stay smart and stay safe!
